Prevention Of Malaria On The Way?

All around the world, malaria can be a very serious problem.-especially in areas where mosquitoes are plentiful, since they are one of the main sources of passing the disease on. An estimated 700,000 people die each year from the debilitating disease, so this is at the utmost urgency. We have all witnessed the distressing images of impoverished people in malaria-ridden lands dying of the disease. Researchers have recently genetically engineered a new kind of mosquito- one completed resistant to the malaria.

The test conducted forced mosquitoes to feed on malaria-infected mice. Some of the mosquitoes were resistant, and those were saved. The mosquitoes that contracted the malaria were thrown out of the experiment. From this singling out, scientists could study and genetically alter/breed new mosquitoes that were resistant to the disease.

The tests are relatively safe- dont worry. The same malaria that infects mice does not infect humans. For this reason, no big leap and bounds have been made just yet. The scientists have begun work on breeding mosquitoes to not transmit the human form of malaria- something that will take time. But the end point could represent a huge sea change in the pattern and spread of the disease.

The tests are funded by the National Institutes of Health. The successes so far are showing some promising results, but nothing can be used as of yet to benefit mankind. The research has expected to one day block the illness, but for now we can only wait and hope.
