31785: The Sacrifice of Giving

When you think about Jesus, giving His life for us it is hard to relate. At least it is for me because I have never actually had to give my life for another person. However, my sister would have.

I dont remember the year, what I do remember is the pain of divorce and losing my son to divorce. Getting over his loss and the loss of my home and wife was turning out to be an impossible task. I kept drinking and started to experience consequences to my alcoholism. By now treatment centers, hospitals and the police seem to be constantly in my life. I lived with my sister and mother and creating chaos was an everyday event. This day would be no different but I did learn how much my sister loved me.

On line, dating was becoming a popular thing to do and I gave it my best shot. You hear horror stories and I guess for this one lady I turned out to be a handful. In addition, she certainly had her own problems. We meet at a local casino and had a connection immediately. The truth is we both lied about who we were and were we had been in life.

This woman was living with a friend in a near by city and was miserable so she moved to Gulfport, Mississippi and started a new job. We dated, actually, the dating part was skipped over, and we decided to live together. I had never ever lived with a person and my drinking was getting worse. I still loved my wife and I wanted to go home but that was out of the question.

After a few days, I got drunk and she told me to move back in with my sister, which I did. However, I still had a key to her apartment. One day, drunk as could be I went to her apartment. She wasnt home but I went in anyway. She had a gun and killing myself seemed like a good idea so I took the gun and put it to my head. I couldnt pull the trigger so I started shooting the walls. I am thankful I didnt kill anyway with this extremely sick behavior.

My mind was in another world and I only remember bits and pieces of what happened. My sister told me someone called her and told her I was shooting a gun so she came over about the time the police arrived. She ran into the apartment in front of the police and found me on the floor passed out. The police were right behind her with their guns pulled ready to shoot me. My sister threw her body over mine and ask me were the gun was. The gun was under me. She told me to throw the gun out into the open, which I did. It turned out my sister who had been married to a highway patrol man knew the police and they let me go home with only a warning.

Today looking back on my sisters actions and the fact she would give her own life for me is unbelievable. I cant believe she did it but she did. We both could have been shot but her love for me was greater than her fear. She gave unselfishly of her self to save her brother. This is exactly what Jesus did for us. He gave of Himself because He loves us so much. This type of giving can be our attitude in life if we have the love of Christ in our hearts. Jesus ask us to give away what we have been given. The only way we can give it away is to first experience His love. You cant give away what you dont have. Giving is a by-product of love. When you care about others the way God cares about you, you will live to give. Today, my sister and I both laugh about this experience and it is only by the grace of God they didnt shoot both of us.
