Today most of the people have telephones or use telephones (often simply referred to as phones). This telecommunication device is used in order to transmit and receive sound and today it is nearly ubiquitous. Today most telephones operate through the transmission of electric signals. These signals are transmitted over a complex telephone network that allows almost any phone user to communicate with others.

Usually a phone handles two kinds of information, i.e. the signals and the voice. A phone handles these two kinds at different times on the same twisted pair of wires. In general the signaling equipment consists of a bell and a dial. While the bell is used to alert the user of incoming calls, the dial is used to enter the phone number for outgoing calls. Apart from the basic principle of calling two other types of telephony exist. These are the digital telephony and the IP telephony.

First in the early 1960s the end-to-end analog telephony has been modified by upgrading transmission networks with T1 carrier systems. In general this development towards the digital telephony has improved the capacity as well as the quality of the network. So this telephony made it possible to significantly increase the number of channels that are multiplexed on a single transmission medium.

The other very popular type is the IP (short for Internet Protocol) telephony that is a service that is based on Voice over IP (short VoIP). Voice over IP is a disruptive technology that is rapidly gaining ground against traditional telephone network technologies. This type of telephony has been mainly used in Japan and South Korea but today it becomes more and more popular all over the world. Therefore one can find many VoIP companies that offer this service to consumers and businesses, especially since 2006.
