Protect Yourself While Gaming - Tips to Avoid Eye Strain and Proper Sitting Tips While Playing Games

Gaming means long hours at the computer. Self absorbent and an obsessive hobby, incorrect habits and posture are detrimental to health. Problems like musculoskeletal injuries, eyestrain, and disabilities of the hands and wrist like, RSI or Repetitive Strain Injury are common. Bad posture causes: pain, stiffness of joints, weakness, bad circulation, as well as swelling. Ensure that:

The desk is designed especially for computers.

While seated, the feet are flat on the floor; arms and thighs are parallel to the ground; back is straight; and the arms dont have to stretch out to reach the keyboard or mouse.

The light source is angled from the side. The primary light source must not shine on the face or directly on the screen. Lighting should have a 10:3 ratio screen characters should be 10X brighter than background and room lights should be 3X the screen brightness. Use a shaded copy lamp to avoid screen reflections.

Reflections and glare are eliminated by using an antiglare screen and by tilting the monitor slightly.

The monitor must be centered so that neither the body nor neck is twisted when viewing the screen.

Schedule regular eye checks.

Monitor blurred vision, headaches, red eyes, or watering eyes.

Splash water and wash your eyes at least 3-4 times a day.

Tips:

It is advisable to take frequent breaks, either do stretches or take a short walk once every hour for 10-15 minutes.

Use a well ventilated room.

Reduce emission in laser printers, photocopiers, and scanners. Problems can be eliminated and the risk reduced by inculcating good posture and working habits.

Subprime Mortgage Loans - A Borrower's Guide to Subprime Lending

Subprime mortgage lending is a relatively new but fast-growing component of the mortgage industry. Lately, however, subprime lenders have come under fire for their tactics -- specifically, for how their tactics relate to the increasing number of home foreclosures in the United States.

But what exactly is a subprime mortgage loan? How are they related to the current rise in foreclosures? And how can you protect yourself if you find yourself in need of a subprime mortgage loan?

These are some of the questions we will answer in this article, a guide to subprime lending and loans.

What is a Subprime Mortgage Loan?
In this context, a subprime loan is a mortgage loan made to a borrower who would not normally qualify for a loan, perhaps due to bad credit issues or other financial problems. Subprime lenders will charge these borrowers a higher interest rate for potential losses the lender might incur (should the borrower default on the mortgage loan).

A History of Subprime Lenders
The number of subprime mortgages rose dramatically through the mid 1990's through early 2000's, as increased competition (largely from online mortgage lenders) forced lenders to offer a broader range of mortgage products.

Subprime lenders, as they became known, tried to outmaneuver competitors by offering mortgage loans to borrowers that their competitors were turning away. In other words, they offered subprime mortgage loans to subprime borrowers, usually with a much higher interest rate.

At an annual housing policy meeting in 2004, Governor Edward Gramlich (then a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve system) had the following remarks about subprime mortgage lending.

  • On the advantages of subprime lending:
    "The obvious advantage of the expansion of subprime mortgage credit is the rise in credit opportunities and homeownership. Because of innovations in the prime and subprime mortgage market, nearly 9 million new homeowners are now able to live in their own homes, improve their neighborhoods, and use their homes to build wealth."

  • On the challenges of subprime lending:
    "While the basic developments in the subprime mortgage market seem positive, the relatively high delinquency rates in the subprime market do raise issues. ... For mortgage lenders the real challenge is to figure out how far to go. ... If lenders do make new loans, can conditions be designed to prevent new delinquencies and foreclosures?"

So there are two sides to the issue of subprime lending. Yes, they extend home ownership to many Americans who might not otherwise afford it. But they are also a contributing factor in the number of home foreclosures in the United States.

Current Criticism of Subprime Mortgages
As the number of foreclosures continued to rise through 2000 to 2006, data analysis suggested a strong link between rising foreclosures and the subprime lending market. Predictably, the federal government got involved and began to scrutinize subprime mortgage lenders.

As a result of increased pressure, banking regulators have tightened their standards for mortgage lending. According to Randall Kroszner, current Federal Reserve Board Governor: "This guidance ... underscores that the Federal Reserve and other banking regulators expect lenders to make sure subprime borrowers not only can afford their monthly payments while the introductory rate is in effect but also after the interest rate resets."

When he refers to "interest rate resets," he is talking about adjustable rate mortgages. With an adjustable rate mortgage, the interest rate adjusts (or resets) after an introductory period of lower interest. The adjustable rate mortgage, or ARM, is another piece of the puzzle connecting subprime lending and foreclosures.

The Subprime-ARM-Foreclosure Connection
As mentioned above, adjustable rate mortgages (or ARM loans) have a role in the subprime foreclosure fiasco of late. The best way to illustrate how ARM loans relate to subprime mortgage foreclosures is to look at an example scenario. The borrowers in this scenario are fictitious, but the scenario itself is realistic and happens every day in this country.

Bob and Jane Smith are shopping for a home mortgage loan, but they are having trouble finding a willing lender because of some credit problems in their past. Eventually, they find a mortgage lender who is willing to loan them money under subprime conditions. Essentially, they extend a loan to the Smiths, but they charge a high interest rate in response to the couple's bad credit history.

At first, the Smiths are concerned with the high interest rate. But the mortgage will be an adjustable rate mortgage with a lower interest rate in the first three years. So the Smiths reason that they can refinance the mortgage before the ARM loan adjusts (or "resets"), thus avoiding the payment shock that can come from higher interest rates.

Two and a half years fly by, and before they know it, the Smiths are facing the uncertainty of their ARM loan adjusting to new interest rates. A higher interest rate (which is likely) could significantly increase the size of their monthly mortgage payment. So the Smiths try to refinance the mortgage. The trouble is that the couple has not improved their credit situation since they took out the subprime mortgage loan, so they are unable to find a favorable refinance loan -- one that won't make their situation worse by lumping closing costs on top of everything else.

So the adjustable rate mortgage resets to a higher interest rate, the Smiths have trouble making the new mortgage payments, and they end up becoming another foreclosure statistic.

This kind of scenario happens every day in the United States. Just watch your local news for a week straight, and you're almost guaranteed to see a story about mortgage refinancing, home foreclosures, subprime lending, or all three topics combined.

Be Smart About Subprime Mortgages
One cannot simply say that subprime mortgages are good or bad. They can be both things, depending on the situation. But one thing is for certain. There is a direct link between subprime lending, adjustable rate mortgages, and the number of home foreclosures in this country. So the best you can do to protect yourself (if you find yourself in a subprime borrowing situation) is to understand how these things are related, seek input from an unbiased financial advisor, and plan accordingly.

Watch Out For Those Gimmicky Mortgages

If you're a first-time home buyer or are looking to lower you mortgage payment substantially, there are now several options to choose from. However, you need to understand that these gimmicky loans could cost you a lot more later.

The first of these gimmicky loans is an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) with negative amortization. Negative amortization is a fancy way of saying that your monthly mortgage payments aren't enough to cover the monthly interest owed. You get a significantly lower monthly payment but the interest you don't pay is tacked on to the principle owed.

If your home continues to increase in value, you'll be okay because even though the principle owed is increasing each year, so is your equity. On the other hand, if the value of you home stays the same or decreases, you can end up owing more than your home is worth making you upside down.

Rising payments

The second problem with an ARM with negative amortization is that even if the mortgage rates don't change, your monthly payments will most likely rise as your lender adjusts rates to recapture the lost interest. So, what you're paying today may be very different from what you're paying five or ten years from now.

The second type of gimmicky loan is the interest-only mortgage. While it also offers a lower monthly payment, it shares the same down side as the ARM with negative amortization that the value of your home may not increase fast enough to keep up with the principle owed.

The refinancing problem

The final problem with these gimmicky loans is that they may be hard to refinance during their first three years because there may be stiff fees or pre-payment penalties involved.

These gimmicky loans can look very attractive. But unless you have good reason to believe that home prices in your area are going to appreciate greatly or you are thinking of selling in less than three years, these loans may not be as good a value as you think.

Ever Lost A Job Or A Business - Welcome To The Club

I can recall over 30 years ago when I was fired from my first sales position. I had two children with another one on the way and not a spare dime to my name. But is that true? Are those offers real? And if they are real why are so many people still desperate to get enough traffic to their sites?

The fact is - all traffic is not created equal. And if you think "hits" to your site will do you any good you might be shocked by what you read next.

You see, there are two sources of traffic. One is visits by real people who are interested in what you do. The other is what some call "raw" traffic, which is simply a visit to your site by a computer robot.

I'm sure you know that the first type of traffic can make you rich while the second will leave you disappointed, disillusioned and (usually) with much less money in your wallet.

The next thing you need to know is this - there are only two ways to get real traffic. You either buy it or you earn it.

Now I'm going to assume for this article that you are not made of money and can't spend $1000 a day buying traffic from Google. So let's look at how you can earn some real traffic - remember by real traffic I mean real people who want to know something more about what you offer.

There are four key factors when getting real people to visit your site. Happily, they have nothing to do with keywords or search engine optimization or cloaking or any "white hat" or "black hat" tricks.

They just work . every time!

KEY FACTOR 1 - Involve people, not robots. If you had ten friends who sent 10 friends to your site how much traffic would you get? If you answered 100 visitors you are only partially right. Let me explain.

When people visit a site they generally do one of three things. They buy, they bookmark or they leave. It has always been so.

That means that the 100 visitors you get today could well return. Assuming that 25% of them do return (which is conservative) then on day two you would get 125 visitors. And so on it goes. When those 125 tell their friends, magic happens.

Just imagine having 20 friends send traffic your way! Or having 10 or your friend's friends sending you traffic.

This viral marketing is the power of the Internet. Be sure to put it to use in your business.

The key to getting real people to send traffic to your site is that this traffic builds and lasts. Very important.

KEY FACTOR 2 - Offer something people want. What do you want? I'm willing to bet that you want more real people to visit your site, which is why you are taking time to read this article.

Guess what - that's what everyone wants. Everyone wants more traffic.

Consider this. What if a good friend of yours, someone you trust, said to you that they could give you all the traffic you wanted to your site and it would only cost you 10 minutes of your time. Would you check it out?

Sure you would.

When you begin to offer people what they really want they will visit your site in record numbers. Selling is hard but giving is easy.

What can you give that people want?

KEY FACTOR 3 - Immediate gratification. Offering something people want is one thing. Giving it to them now is something else.

In what ever you do, be sure there is an element if immediate gratification. Offer something that people can do right now, something they can benefit from in the next 10 minutes. When you do that you will see your traffic numbers rise dramatically.

What if there was a way for people who know and like you to recommend you immediately? Or to act on your advice quickly?

Review how you get traffic, or try to, today and ask yourself "is this working quickly enough?" If the answer is no, keep searching for a quicker solution.

KEY FACTOR 4 - Leverage - One effort creates many actions. This is huge. When it comes to generating traffic for your website you simply can not afford to spend all day every day placing ads or posting to blogs or any of that.

What you must do is find a way to do the work once and reap the benefit many times.

Think of it this way - would it be more effective to build a site and get 1000 visitors or to work with a site that gets 10,000 visitors? If you answered with the latter, you understand leverage.

You don't need to reinvent the wheel to succeed. By partnering with sites that have traffic now you can get all the traffic you want and begin to build your own powerful web presence.

Using the tips above I believe you will discover that getting more, and better, traffic just might be easier than you think!

Buying Homeowners Insurance

There are many variations of homeowners policies available for consumers. Companys policies may be different from state to state. There are different types of property to insure and customers have differing needs. This means there is no single insurance policy type that is always the best. I suggest that you take a little time to discover what is available, what your coverage options are, and to shop for a good policy with a favorable cost.

A primary part of your homeowners policy is for the homes structure. It would often cost more to rebuild the home than what the homes appraised value is. I suggest getting a policy with a coverage amount of the rebuild cost, or the appraised value, whichever is higher. Most insurance companies have software that can calculate the rebuilt estimated amount. Next you should make sure the policy has sufficient coverage for any other structures such as a detached garage, storage shed, swimming pool, etc...

There will be a separate limit listed on your policy for personal property. Make sure the limit is enough for what you own. Your agent should also explain how a loss would be paid. The best coverage is where your property would be covered for what it will cost to purchase new goods of equal quality. Some types of personal property have sub limits. For example you may have a personal property limit of $75,000 with a sub limit of $1,000 for computers. If the sub limit is too low you may be able to increase that sub limit at additional cost. Other sub limit examples could be guns, jewelry, currency, paintings, etc...

The personal liability portion of your policy protects you from loss for injuries to others. For example if a guest slips and falls on a wet floor or your pet bites someone. Your agent should explain exactly what is covered and what your limit options are. Typically you might get $300,000 in coverage with the option to increase to $500,000 at a small additional cost.

There are other elements to a policy. I suggest taking some time to compare policies from a couple different companies. Your state insurance regulatory department may have information to help you shop. The least expensive plan may not be the best buy! Make sure your coverage meets your needs and that your agent carefully explains the details. In many cases you will save by getting your auto and homeowners insurance from the same company. You can usually save on the premium by going with a higher deductible. Ask your agent to give you information on the cost with different deductibles. Note that your mortgage lender may have rules about the coverage and deductible for your policy.

Choosing Your Resort Area in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is a land of resorts. But even if you don't know where you want to stay, you can narrow your choices by deciding what area in the city you most prefer. With few exceptions, Las Vegas resort layout is somewhat linear, with most resorts located on a four-mile stretch of Highway 91, also known as Las Vegas Boulevard. Interestingly, while considered part of Las Vegas, the strip itself is actually outside the city proper.

Traveling up the strip, from south to north, is very much like taking a trip back in time. With a few notable exceptions, the southernmost resorts are generally the largest, newest, and most modern facilities with contemporary design and more of a luxurious atmosphere. The further north one travels, the resorts be-come reminiscent of the classic Las Vegas, with the flashier lights and glittery symbols made famous in the earlier years of the strip.

Finally, downtown Las Vegas, in an area commonly called Fremont Street, is just a short drive from the strip. This section is the Las Vegas of yesterday. Today it is called the Fremont Street Experience which includes a pedestrian-only street covered by a domed roof. It was here that Las Vegas was born.

Not all resorts are on the strip or in downtown, however. Many area locals (and sometimes tourists) venture off the strip to find more inexpensive accommodations, locals casinos, or an intimate, out-of-the-way setting.

South Strip
The south strip is along Las Vegas Boulevard, from the tip of the strip to Flamingo Road. This section is where most of the largest hotels in Las Vegas are located. Within a small quarter-mile (or so) are some truly gargantuan properties. In fact, the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue is the busiest in America.

Mid-Strip
Between Flamingo Road and Spring Mountain Road is the mid-strip section of town. Mid-strip became the birthplace of the Las Vegas Strip when Bugsy Siegel built the Fabulous Flamingo in the late 1940s. Today, this section of town contains the most compact resorts; they are among the smaller ones on the strip but there are many of them in a small area.

North Strip
North of Spring Mountain Road all the way to the Stratosphere (north of Sahara), is the north strip area. North strip is the smallest resort area on the strip, but it contains the true classic Las Vegas properties from the 1950s. The last remaining hotels of the rat-pack era are here, and the area is a bit more spread out and visibly aging than the other, newer sections of town. Still, it is the best way to enter the Vegas of yesteryear; even Fremont Street has updated itself more than the north strip area.

Downtown / Fremont Street
Fremont Street is the quintessential classic Las Vegas, with shimmering light-adorned awnings, cramped smoky gaming quarters, and throngs of onlookers. Everything seems a bit closer here. Fremont Streets attendance has understandably gone downhill since the popularization of strip resorts, but it has been re-invented several times over. Today the 2-block road is closed to automobile traffic, and a sun-blocking canopy (great for hot days) is high above the street.

Off-Strip
And then there are the resorts outside of the main area. And with Nevadas liberal casino laws, there are many, all over the place. Drive on a main road, in any direction, and youre sure to come across a large resort complex. Of course, this is not limited to the Las Vegas area; but this book will focus only on nearby off-strip resorts.

Weird Dreams and the Writer

Sometimes my dreams frighten me. Sometimes they crack me up. Literally. The whole scene from the movie The Waterboy--in which a college professor asks the class why alligators are aggressive and in which Adam Sandler stand ups and scientifically explains Because alligators got all them teeth and no toothbrushreplayed in a dream and apparently made me laugh out loud in my sleep. Sometimes my dreams are simply telling me I need a major vacation from reality, like when I dream Im proofreading the always-riveting prescribing information for a drug product, that insert with the really tiny type that contains all the potential side effects and warnings for the drug, which, if you actually read it, can make you completely mental.

My mother, my aunt, and I always have really weird dreams when theres a full moon. Whats the scientific explanation for this? Im sure I dont know. Once my mom dreamt she was covered in baked potatoes. She also dreamt she was a basketball star and kept running down the court and dunking the ball (shes five-foot-three, by the way, and she woke up sweating). Most of my weirdest dreams involve food. Once I was floating in a life-size ice cream sundae with peanut butter sauce. Another time I was roller skating inside a huge pinball machine and there were snack bars in the bumpers. Im pretty sure I was dieting when I had those dreams. Why cant I dream normal dreams about Pierce Brosnan orwait, I DID dream about Pierce Brosnan once and I cant go into the sordid details here.

Sometimes it helps to take a dream apart and interpret it. Sometimes, frankly, interpretation is crap; a dream is just a dream. But lets try it with one of mine. The giant sundae. Dreaming of ice cream evidently denotes pleasure and satisfaction with your life, good luck and success in love. I have yet to come across a dream book that actually has entries for peanut butter sauce. I dreamt there were tornadoes swirling all about me the other nightthis supposedly suggests I am experiencing extreme emotional outbursts and temper tantrums (wait, thats just my daily work day!). I also dreamt I got kicked off American Idol (I was in the final round at least), and again, I laughed in my sleep. On a more serious note, several days before 911, my mom and both had strange dreams; I dreamt I was among many people running to get out of a very tall building in New York City and she dreamt a submarine hit the ocean floor so hard a building collapsed. That was, frankly, freaky.

My point, and I do have one, is that dreams can be really good fodder for a writer. I read somewhere that we all daydream an average of 70 to 120 minutes a day. Obviously, there are some who take time-wasting to a whole other level, daydreaming 18 hours a day. Thats a lot of wasted time unless you put it to good use, say, like in your novel. I highly recommend activity like sleeping and daydreaming that lets your mind wander and decreases your level of awareness to the point that you lose yourself in your imagined story (not, of course, when youre operating heavy machinery or driving on a multi-lane highway or performing brain surgery). For my first fiction suspense novel, Dead On, I was thinking about my characters so much that I actually began dreaming about them. Chapter 21 of Dead On is actually the result of a dream I had, which I believe in part may be either inherited memory or a traumatic past life I lived before the recorded and often skewed history in textbooks. I used most of the dream in the book and added a little bit to it, because of course, Dead On is fiction.

Dreams can heal, entertain, inform and stimulate. Some dreams are fairly commonlike being caught naked in a public place or being back in high school where you cant remember your friggin locker combination. In the case of the writer, dreams can help you plot and explore while your cranky, nit-picking, self-debasing critic is down and out. Dreaming can help you be the writer you always imagined yourself to be, can connect us to the human race and our art. The benefit of covering yourself with baked potatoes, however, is still being studied.
