Drug abuse by teenagers is very common, which can lead to disastrous consequences in the future. This question arose when I spoke to an old friend from University who is now in the secured or homeowner lead generation business, he was telling me that in the last year he had seen a massive rise in secured loan applications. He was of the view that the people who were taking secured loans over re-mortgages were less financially sophisticated than the people who were going for a re-mortgage.

My first impression was that this might be the case, as interest rates having been rising for a while and anybody who was at a stage of a variable rate mortgage would be feeling the pinch, it would be an ideal time for these people to consider re-mortgaging. I thought to myself is there a general fear of change amongst people or perhaps the hassle of going through the re-mortgage process is too much of a burden. Then I started thinking maybe secured or homeowner loans might have their own advantages.

Clearly getting a secured loan is much faster way of raising finance on your property than a re-mortgage. A secured loan application can be completed within 2 weeks, you normally dont have to pay any fees to solicitors, surveyors etc. The interest rates are quite competitive and a secured loan is easier to get than a re-mortgage, especially if your income is not exactly reaching the multiples you need to raise the extra finance from the equity in your property through a re-mortgage. The desire for credit in UK has been at a boom in the last few years, which is one of the reasons we have seen the interest rates rise every few months. It could be the case that the people who are choosing secured loans are not that financially incapable, especially if they are looking at debt consolidation or even thinking of buying a new car on finance, as car finance companies and some credit cards can charge a very high APR.

Today workers are the main commodities being traded. Workers are put on a global trading block to compete with one another down to the lowest levels of wage slave and even child labor. Smith would tell Free Traders not to use his name as a tool for their counterfeit free markets. He would have rejected the greed, power and money that drives Free Trade. He was really a Populist who challenged both capitalists and colonialists to conduct business for the good of all. Free Trade has narrowed competition to elite groupings and vast-trans national corporations. It has closed the door to fair trade.

The industrial revolution and capitalism did not exist in its modern form when Adam Smith lived. He was not a supporter of "laissez-faire" practices in the transaction of business and never even used the term. Farming and mercantile enterprises were the main business pursuits of his time. Manufacturing and production as we know it were something coming in the future. Free Trade is based on moving production and factories from place to place base on the cheapest labor markets of the world. Smith believed the opposite as far as wages are concerned. He believed that better wages improved the capacity of workers who are encouraged by enjoying the fruits of their work to the utmost. He still would have been against government controlling the flow of business but at the same time he would have confronted those who live off the suffering of workers. He would point to the government's part in business as the result of the free enterprise system failing its mission to serve the whole of any society.

Smith did say "self interests" were the roots of good enterprises but meant it in a different way as it is defined today. His most famous statement was "It is not the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from the regard to their own interest" - On the other side of the coin , he believed selfish "private interests" led to the "spirit of monopoly" which is obviously happening today in the global economic arena. There is nothing really free about it especially when workers have no voice in the process and are at the bottom of any discussion about Globalization and Free Trade. Protestors are put down fast while meetings of the elite groupings take place. The elite groups from governments, vast-transnational corporations and economists who are far from the real world work day, all meet to set the markets according to their wills. They concentrate on production and investment and ignore the workers. In a weird way, Capitalism and Communism have locked hands in the degradation of human dignity in the work day.

Unemployment rates in the U.S. and other major countries are fabricated to cover the most massive dislocation of workers in history. The U.S. prison population keeps breaking records and only about 40% of all workers qualify for unemployment insurance. This demonstrates the vast voids in the reporting of unemployment. The term underemployment which was once used to cover workers who could not find a full time job has now faded away. A person making only a $100 a month is now considered employed. At the same time, governments keep reporting statistical prosperity while economic decay is obviously all around us. Franklin Roosevelt said economic diseases are highly communicable. Today these disease are an epidemic seemingly out of control. An economic virus has infected the world. A new kind of colonialism has been bred. Nations find they must control their interests worldwide. This causes terrorism and wars.

If Adam Smith was alive today, he would be promoting a book by John Perkins titled Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. This book tells all about the money manipulations by our government saddling third world countries with debts they will never be able to pay. All who are interested in Social Justice and Distributive Justice should read this book instead of The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman. Distributive Justice calls for all parts of any society and economy to serve what is best for the whole of any society and not strip human dignity out of it in the workday. Yorkstone, The Ideal Stone for Engraved House Signs and Commemorative Plaques

Yorkstone is one of those quintessential English stones that everyone has heard about but how many people actually know what a very special stone Yorkstone really is? Of all the natural stones quarried in the UK York stone is probably the most versatile. Used for paving, house signs, headstones, fireplaces and all types of buildings from churches to office blocks. Yorkstone is now increasingly the stone of choice for house signs.

Yorkstone is a sedimentary Limestone, that is a stone laid down from the sediment of long disappeared lakes and seas. This process means that all sedimentary limestones are to a greater or lesser degree layered or stratified. The strata on stones such as Portland or Bath stone are deep and each layer or strata can produce a different class of stone some with fine clear stone, some with heavy fossilised shell. However, York stone is laid down in fine layers of just a few millimetres thick per layer.

It is this layering that gives Yorkstone much of its character. The stone is constructed in layers or strata, that can be seen in the edge of the stone. This forms a dense hard stone with greater tensile strength than most other limestones.

It is this tensile strength and hardness that makes York stone so suitable as paving. Yorkstone paving slabs have an incredible capacity for wear and tear, and today old York paving originally laid down a hundred or more years ago is a prized and expensive re-claimed commodity.

The colour of new Yorkstone tends to be mainly buff or gold, but old Yorkstone was commonly available in greys and dark browns as well as a true blue! This variety of colour and hue made Yorkstone the material of choice for fireplace builders in the eighties. As a young man I built hundreds of these fireplaces, sadly out of fashion now of course.

Yorkstone is ideal for engraving as it seldom shows sign of the fossil shell that can mar the finish of other limestones and the colour generally remains fairly uniform throughout the slab or block though can darken when a new layer or strata is cut through. The density of the grain means that engravings and carvings are crisp and sharp.

This uniformity and consistency is one of the reasons Yorkstone has always been valued for its suitability for engraving. It has been used for generations for headstones and today is being increasingly chosen for engraved house signs and commemorative plaques.

Yorkstone has other attributes less well known, for instance did you know that it is an excellent fine abrasive? All stone masons yard and workshops used to have a block of Yorkstone and a large hand turned Yorkstone wheel for sharpening chisels. Lubricated with water the stone was often the only sharpening stone available. Another use was to finish off the leaded lettering on headstones. After the lead had been hammered into the finished letters, they were rubbed over with a piece of York stone and water, this flattened and blackened the lead at the same time.

Lastly the reason I love this stone is its ability to age and weather gracefully. Old York stone headstones, walls and signs hundreds of years old, covered in moss, and the grime of history with the inscriptions all but unreadable are still very beautiful and the quality of the stone still shines through!

One word of warning, the dust created by dry cutting Yorkstone can be a serious health risk, if you are going to work Yorkstone wear a proper respirator or better still cut it wet.

Science Projects for School and Fairs

A good teacher uses whatever he can to reach struggling students. It could be books, flashcards, extra homework or, in the case of Hasan Suzuk, a 17-year-old girl.

In what turned out to be a win-win situation, the Dove Science Academy teacher helped 10th-grader Areli Hernandez create a prize-winning science project by befriending and tutoring a gaggle of sixth-grade girls.

Twice a week for six months, Hernandez and eight younger girls, all Hispanic, met after school in a classroom at the charter school at 919 NW 23. While the sixth-graders worked on homework, Hernandez was there to help and to get to know them.

'Big sister' The group also bonded over four off-campus dinners - twice at Hernandez's house. They celebrated each other's birthdays and played "Secret Santa" at Christmas.

"She's like their big sister," Suzuk said. "Sometimes they talk about boyfriends or problems at home. They share everything, not just the work."

Tests and surveys at the start and end of the six-month experiment showed every girl raised her grades and teachers reported improved study skills and self-esteem. As a group, their standardized test scores jumped almost 20 points in math and 13 points in reading.

Hernandez credits Suzuk with suggesting the science project, which finished first in its division at the Oklahoma Junior Academy of Science this week. But Suzuk said it was Hernandez's idea to expand the school's traditional tutoring into a closer relationship.

Now other sixth-grade girls are demanding a big sister too, and some of the original eight who no longer need tutoring refuse to leave the program, Suzuk said. One girl told him she would deliberately do poorly on a standardized test if doing well meant being removed from the program.

Suzuk, who teaches sixth-grade math and computer science, said mentoring works because it is based on a relationship that is not possible between a student and teacher.

"When a student helps them, they see her as a friend, not a teacher," Suzuk said. Program widens, but no boys In a group interview, the younger girls sang Hernandez's praises. "At first I didn't understand some things, and she helped me understand. My grades got higher. She helped me a lot and she's nice," Yemelin Calderon said.

"If we don't understand, we could tell her," Andrea Espinoza said.Laura Martinez, whose daughter Eliza participated, said she never hesitated to give permission.

"The girls, they need the help. Mine, she was a little bit behind in math and now she's up," Laura Martinez said. The big-sister relationship also was good for her daughter, who is an oldest child, the mother said.

Based on Hernandez's success, Suzuk has expanded the program. He now has five 10th-graders and a dozen sixth-graders involved. So far, the school has not experimented with a mentoring program for boys.
