Ever wonder where everyone is going? The Source US department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, Office of Travel and Tourism Industries lists the top ten international travel destinations from the United States. The top destination is of course Europe, followed by the Caribbean, Mexico, Asia and Canada. The Caribbean destination is the top cruise destination accounting for 40% of itineraries. The last five destinations are South America, Central America, Oceania, the Middle East and Africa. Better get your passports ready! Remember there are new passport regulations requiring passports whenever you leave the country and the passport office is running behind with requests.

Remember to organize your entire travel plans as the airports and cruise lines are busy and seem to be running to capacity. Travel agents and luggage stores are good sources to research travel information. There are loads of books written and everything is also available on the web. Keep in mind the smaller carryon sizes for International destinations and the new weight restriction on baggage. You'll want to pack lightweight luggage to keep within the 50lb. restrictions. Plan ahead and your travel plans should run smoothly.

The US Department of Transportation lists the top domestic airplane routes. This information is based on enplaned passengers of all airports for a city pair from November of 2005 to October of 2006. Anyone who's traveled to or from these destinations can testify to the accuracy. Number one is New York to Chicago with 3.14 million passengers a year. Chicago is followed by Ft. Lauderdale to New York, Los Angles to Chicago, Atlanta to New York, Washington, DC to Chicago, Denver to Chicago, Atlanta to Washington, DC, Atlanta to Orlando, New York to Orlando, and last is Las Vegas to Chicago. Orlando is home of Disney World along with many other attractions. The number 10 destination is Las Vegas to Chicago and they handle 2.42 million passengers a year. That's a lot of travelers flying in and out of these busy airports. When booking your travel plans, remember to keep up with security rules and requirements. The trip is easier and will go more smoothly if you are prepared. Using the TSA locks on your luggage shows that you have been researching and are adhering to the airline rules. The 3-1-1cosmetic case for your liquids and gels in your carryon bags is the newest of the regulations. Now you'll need to pack the majority of your cosmetics and toiletries in your discount luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carryon bag must fit into a quart-sized bag zippered bag.

No use finding out the airlines aren't offering travel pillows or blankets when you have already boarded. There are wrist-bands to ward off nausea and No Jet-lag to take away time changes. There's packing cubes to make packing or unpacking a breeze. Check out all that's available to make the trip more enjoyable.

I always like to pack the "what ifs." Take along one of the new lightweight umbrellas or small travel raincoats. Bring some travel laundry soap in case you need to clean up. Take a folding tote that will bring back the purchases which you could not resist. A luggage strap can keep your overstuffed case from popping open. Bright luggage tags will help you to identify your bags quickly. A travel wallet will keep your passport and other necessary papers organized and in one place. Shoe covers will let you pack dirty shoes back into your case. Now choose one of these exciting destinations and have a wonderful trip!

Can You Sell a Service on eBay?

Most people think of eBay as a place where you sell physical items. They often start by selling unwanted bits and pieces from the attic, moving on to other things in the garage and, if it takes a hold, venturing into the market of buying items to sell.

Not many people associate eBay as a place where you can sell a service.

Let's imagine I want to offer my services as a French language teacher. Where else do you know that you can advertise for 10 days, reach an audience of millions and only pay a few pounds or dollars in fees?

I can easily create an auction with my language services such as teaching, proofreading, editing etc. I list my qualifications and any appropriate memberships I have. I also include a photo of myself - making it personal.

What I am really doing with this auction is selling myself.

I would start the auction at a minimum hourly rate, and probably have a Buy it Now hourly rate too.

I know of a guy who lives in Germany and offered English language services on eBay.de. Within days he received work, and had to re-list many times as his Buy it Now rate was being taken up regularly. He gained commercial and private customers alike.

I also heard of a group of computer programmers who were made redundant after their jobs went "offshore". Having found it difficult to find new jobs, they decided to turn to eBay. Their ideal was to stay together as a team of software developers. So they created an auction to give the winning bidder the rights to negotiate exclusively for their services. The winning bid amount would go to a charity.

They started the bidding at $250, and the auction went well. They did indeed find an employer who wanted to take the whole team. And the group made several hundred dollars for their charity. A highly satisfactory outcome!

Revitalize Your Recruiting for 2005

Happy New Year! The forecasts are in agreement: Hiring is on the rise. 2005 will mark the revitalization of our economy. In fact, hiring plans may rival 1999 statistics, when the economy was at its strongest.

The beginning of the year is a time for renewal and an opportunity to make positive changes. Will you keep doing what you did in 2004? Or are you ready to change the direction of your recruiting and staffing model?

Journal and newspaper ads continue to deluge hiring managers with resumes by the pound. The Big 3 internet job boards just arent getting it done. Everyone has a Careers page on their corporate web site, but Im guessing that most of you arent exactly overwhelmed with the results.

Its time for some fresh ideas.

Here are seven recruiting tips you can consider to blend into your existing arsenal:

1) Start a blog. By now weve all heard a lot about blogging. Thats because this is a very cost effective communications tool. Every time I write an entry to my blog, Googlebot (Googles spider) crawls my blog. Corporations can blog to drive traffic to a Careers page where the exact audience you are targeting can then apply for open positions.

Remember to optimize your headline; write about what people are surfing for on the web. Then watch your audience grow (I dont know about you, but I like it when my reading audience increases every week). Next months article will cover blogging tools, traffic conversion and SEM/SEO tools. And most of these tools are FREE.

2) Publish an e-newsletter. What better way to keep in touch with current employees and be sure they are aware of plans to expand, new projects underway, or changes to your employee referral plan? This is another extremely favorable cost-benefit tool; if you set this up properly, it shouldnt be a drain on your resources or time.

In fact, why stop at only one e-newsletter? Why not create an alternate version to communicate with former alumni who have left your organization? The people that youd hire back in a heartbeat if given the opportunity. Share all of the hot news, and publish photos and audio testimonials from current employees who miss working with them.

Are there a few individuals in particular who you would love to have back into your organization? Consider sending them personalized audio postcards from your CEO. No one is doing this (yet), so you will really stand out and make a strong impression.

3) Engage in regular direct mail campaigns. Use postcard marketing to:

Drive traffic to a website where you may have jobs posted.

Announce the location of your booth at the next trade show.

Advertise and promote your Employee Referral Program (ERP).

You can also use postcard campaigns to reach profile candidates regularly. Profile candidates are those people you would hire any day of the week because there are constant needs for these positions (e.g. nurses, SAS programmers, CRAs, etc.). Run a campaign designed to encourage people to apply for specialized positions which they may not have otherwise heard about.

4) Make your corporate Careers page a priority. Be sure jobs are updated frequently and that positions that have been filled are removed. Consider using a pop-under box when a visitor leaves your site; ask them (with audio) Are you sure you are ready to leave the site? How can we make our site better? Then read and act on the feedback that people will readily share with you.

In addition, review your site to make sure youre speaking to specific skill sets and audiences. For example, do you address different types of candidates (diversity, current employees, part-time, contract, allied health, nursing, physicians, military, summer jobs, internships)? Do you engage them in conversations specific to your needs and theirs?

5) Learn to throw a boomerang. Actually, the boomerang effect is a relatively new trend of inviting back talented former employees into the fold. Surveys indicate 12% of employers cautiously admit they would re-hire ex-employees (alumni). An additional 21% say they welcome back alumni without hesitation because of the time and dollar savings. In fact, the Gartner Group estimated that by 2003, 60% of mid to large-sized companies will have routinely hired back former employees.

6) Try CEO Campaigns (a hidden secret that costs $0.09 a minute!). Okay, I admit that the actual costs to apply this tip depend on your phone plan charges! But let's ignore that detail for a moment.

Have you ever received a call from someone at a senior level in your profession just to talk about YOU? It's flattering. It sure doesn't happen every day. And you won't soon forget it. Have your senior management team make three calls each month without fail to hot candidates. Then delegate the follow-up contact work to someone who can act as a peer ambassador. This no-pressure approach will build good will and portray your place of work as being a progressive, in-demand, and creative place to work.

7) Give your ERP a tune-up. Do you have an ERP (Employee Referral Program)? If you dont, you need to develop one. It doesnt have to be complicated, but essentially your current employees should be rewarded for recommending friends and peers to apply for open position needs you have. Some clients Ive worked with developed very successful programs paying $1,000.00 to $5,000.00 per employee referred who was a successful hire. Does that sound like a lot of money? Compare it to the drain of not having critical, hard-to-fill positions remain open month after month. Youll find this level of cash reward to be quite a bargain.

Ive also seen other organizations give away $50.00 movie certificates, or $500.00 towards personal expenses, for more common position needs.

Top companies find many of their hires through well-developed referral structures, combining exciting programs, innovative technology, and constant communication. Often, these hires are more loyal and get up to speed faster. A successful ERP also boosts morale and will serve as a means for your employees to directly contribute to your organizational success.

Help! I Lost My Car

Do you ever lose your car in a parking lot be it immense or just large? Do you ever think how easy it would be if only the parking lots rows were numbered or lettered?

I have this terrible problem of walking out of my car at the shopping center and forgetting where I parked it. There are so many doors and building you can enter without giving it a thought.

It is amazing the number of people I meet wandering around in a daze trying to find their cars just like me.

So I am not the only one. Nearly everybody I talk to has at one time or another misplaced their car.

I do not mind on a beautiful day it just makes it an adventure and a nice walk. I am talking about the time I am pressed for time, when it is raining, when it is freezing cold or it is so hot the black top seems to sear my legs.

Then not being able to come into contact with my car without walking the complete parking lot becomes a real problem.

So I say to you wonderful people that maintain parking lots. How about numbering or lettering the parking lot rows. It would make my life and yours a heck of a lot easier.

What Your Child is Doing on MySpace?

There are a number of different things that your kids can do on the popular social networking site MySpace. They can communicate with other students that they go to school with and family members and other friends too, but are they safe?

Obviously children that use MySpace are not on there trying to find predators that will prey on them. They are there to fulfill an emotional need through the peer pressure. After all, teens have managed to place a great deal of importance on these types of social networking sites, and if you are a teen and you don't participate, you become an outcast.

Most of the time, these teenagers are there to look for their friends, putting up pictures of themselves and their friends in order to highlight their own lives and the boost their social value in that peer group. Remember, most teens are seeking to find their own identities and feel the need to live up to crushing effects of peer pressure, like having premarital teen sex, doing drugs and or drinking.

However, when adults look at these types of social networking sites, they see things a little differently than the children do. This is because parents are usually better at seeing the big picture about things that will or could happen later in the life of their child, while teenagers are more involved with what is happening right now and typically only see the things from a short term perspective effectively ignoring the long term effects and consequences of their actions right now.

When children put up pictures of themselves online and personal information about what school they go to, what sports or activities they do, they are providing the information and tools an internet predator needs to locate them in the real world. This is just one example of how kids don't understand or ignore the consequences of their online behavior.

As the single most popular social networking site in the world, MySpace is used a tremendous number of people. And while the majority of people use it with innocent intentions, there are clear many that do not and teenagers under the age of 18 present a inviting target for these individuals.

When positive attention is directed at a teen, even over the internet, these children are almost always appreciative of the attention. This attention is carefully crafted to ensure that the teen feel special and important, which they may feel on their own at the point in their lives when they are most vulnerable.

While these kids certainly do not intend to be drawn into this sort of emotional manipulation, they will gravitate towards the attention given to them by the predator, particularly if the predator is manipulative enough and if the child or teenager is pliable enough.

As a result, parents need to be more involved in what their children do both on and online. By providing children with the education that they need and the support and personal validation that they are looking for, parents can ensure that their child doesn't become a statistic at the hands of an Internet sex offender.

Asbestosis: Top Jobs That Put You At Risk

Who Invented Baseball?

The boys of summer are at again. Whom can we bless for the Great American Pastime?

One thing is for certain. It wasn't Abner Doubleday at Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1839 -- as a self appointed commission of American patriots would have us believe. Let us dispose of the Doubleday myth before proceeding.

Doubleday was born in 1819 at Ballston Spa, N.Y., of a family outstanding in military and civil life. He attended school in 1835 at Cooperstown where he enrolled in engineering courses. He was appointed to West Point in 1838 and was graduated in 1842 with a commission in the artillery.

He served with distinction in the Mexican and Florida Seminole wars. He fired the first Union shot at Fort Sumter after the Confederate bombardment opening the War Between the States. He became a major-general and died in 1893.

It is noteworthy that in the 60 diaries Doubleday kept throughout his life, he does not mention baseball. In one letter to headquarters during the Civil War, Doubleday did request "recreational items for colored troops" that included a "magic lantern and baseball equipment."

Doubleday would have become a footnote to the Civil War had it not been for another Abner with the surname Graves.

In 1905, a famous sportswriter named Henry Chadwick wrote an article contending that baseball evolved from the old English game of Rounders.

This upset Albert Spalding, one of the game's pioneer players and a manufacturer of sports equipment. He was unable to accept a premise that the great American game did not originate in America.

Spalding organized a commission of seven prominent men, patriots all, to determine the "true origin" of baseball. The project was widely reported.

Heading the commission was Col. A.G. Mills of New York. He had played baseball before and during the Civil War and was the fourth president of the National League in 1884.

The commission was pretty much at a dead end until Abner Graves, a Denver mining engineer traveling in Akron, Ohio, saw a newspaper article about the commission. He sat down in his hotel room and on furnished stationery wrote the Mills Commission.

In the letter, Graves stated that he had observed Doubleday at Cooperstown in 1839 scratching a baseball diamond on the ground and instructing other young men how to play baseball with teams of 11 players and four bases.

Graves described how the ball used was homemade of stitched horse-hide stuffed with rags.

The Mills commissioners and Spalding were elated. They promptly proclaimed baseball was invented by an American, Civil War, Army officer. About as all-American as you can get.

Of no consequence was the lack of corroborating evidence. Graves shortly thereafter murdered his wife and was committed to an asylum for the insane.

Graves' story was patently false. He would have been just five years old in 1839 and therefore not a reliable observer. Doubleday had entered West Point in 1838 and therefore was not present that year in Cooperstown.

It is possible that Doubleday was remembered at Cooperstown school -- which Graves later attended - as having organized a baseball game among his fellow students. However, rudiments of the game - as we recognize it today -- were already well known throughout the country.

Twenty-seven years after the Mills Commission triumphant report, a relative of Graves, rummaging through his old trunk, found an old baseball with torn hide over a wad of rags. Graves' letter and torn baseball are displayed today as proof-positive at the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame.

How Baseball Began

Stick and ball games were recorded back in pyramidal times.

"Stool ball" was described in the 1085 Doomsday Book census of England. Variations were rounders, town ball, and one-o-cat.

On Christmas Day 1621, Governor Bradford at Plymouth Plantation noted that men of the colony "frolicking in ye street, at play openly; some at pitching ye ball, some at stoole ball and such-like sport."

In 1744, John Newbery of London, England, published A Pretty Little Pocket Book "intended for the amusement of Little Master Tommy and Pretty Miss Polly." A woodcut illustration depicted boys playing "Base-Ball" in which they progressed around posts.

George Ewing, a Revolutionary War doctor at Valley Forge in 1778, wrote: "Exercised in the afternoon intervals, played at base."

A New York University librarian, George A. Thompson, Jr., recently found two New York newspaper articles of April 12, 1823, clearly relating to modern baseball.

The longer story, in the National Advocate, was composed of just four sentences:

"I was last Saturday much pleased in witnessing a company of active young men playing the manly and athletic game of base ball' at the Retreat in Broadway.

"I am informed they are an organized association, and that a very interesting game will be played on Saturday next at the above place, to commence at half-past 3 o'clock p.m. Any person fond of witnessing this game may avail himself of seeing it played with consummate skill and wonderful dexterity. It is surprising, and to be regretted, that the young men of our city do not engage more in this manual sport. It is innocent amusement, and healthy exercise, attended with but little expense and has no demoralizing tendency."

Teams Organized

The first organized baseball team was formed at New York City in 1845 by two, young friends. They were Dr. Daniel L. Adams and Alexander Joy Cartwright, an accounting clerk. They and other young, professional men met after work at Madison Square.

Adams and Cartwright settled on a set of rules in 1845 so there would not be endless arguments. Cartwright wrote them down.

At that time, the playing field was usually square with five bases. Because of the confined area, the diamond and four bases were adopted. Distance between bases was set at "42 paces" (about 75 feet) and the concept of foul territory was introduced. The practice of "plunking" a runner - hitting him with a thrown ball to "out" him --was abolished as ungentlemanly.

The Madison Square players formed the Knickerbockers Base Ball Club in September 1845. With rules in hand, the Knickerbockers advertised for opponents.

They met the New York Nine at the neutral Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey, on June 19, 1846.

The Nines won 23-l. The score indicated the game followed the rules of rounders, ending after 21 runs were scored rather than a specific number of innings.

According to contemporary reports, Cartwright umpired the game and enforced a six-cent fine -- payable on the spot -- for swearing.

Cartwright joined the California gold rush on 1849, but arrived there too late. On the way back home via ship he became ill and was put ashore at Hawaii. He liked the tropical climate so well, he sent for his family. He started baseball clubs throughout the islands, and became a prosperous businessman. He died there in 1892.

The Knickerbockers Club continued active under the leadership of Dr. Adams. He introduced the position of roving shortstop -- for himself -- to relay outfield throws. He designed the tapered bat and invented the hard baseball of "rubber cuttings and yarn" to facilitate thrown balls and make the curve ball possible. He set the distances between bases at 90 feet in 1857.

Also that year, he presided over a convention of ballplayers who decided that the winner of a game was the team that was ahead after nine innings. The following year the group adopted the name National Association of Ball Players."

He pushed for a rule requiring a batter be called out if the ball was caught on the fly instead of the first bounce. This was hotly debated, but in 1860 it was decided fly balls were necessary if both teams agreed to it before hand.

Dr. Adams gave up his New York practice in 1865 and moved his family to Connecticut. He played his last, formal game of baseball in 1875 in an old-timers' contest. He died in 1899 at age 85 in New Haven - still playing backyard baseball with his sons.

It is ironic that Cartwright, Spalding, and Doubleday are memorialized at Cooperstown while Adams is not -- even though he devised all the modern rules of baseball.

Not to quibble. History is mostly agreed-upon legend, and baseball is as much icon as sport.

Why Boat Insurance Is A Necessity

Diabetic Coma Symptoms

Diabetic comas occur when the blood sugar level is extremely low or extremely high.

Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar can cause a diabetic to become unconscious or have a seizure if it continues for any length of time. A diabetic could become hypoglycemic if they :

Took too much insulin

Did too much exercise

Skipped a meal

Took excessive alcohol without food

Typical early symptoms of hypoglycemia are

Tiredness

Disorientated or confused

Depending on how pronounced the symptoms are would determine the treatment. If the symptoms are relatively mild you can take a blood test and identify that the blood sugar level is low and then take a glucose tablet or something similar. If the symptoms are severe then you should seek medical assistance immediately.

Hypersmolar diabetic syndrome is when the blood sugar level gets extremely high. The level of sugar causes the blood to change consistency and become thicker and syrupy. Excessive sugar in the blood causes the kidneys to try to remove it as a waste product. It does this through excessive urination. This can lead to dehydration which if prolonged can lead to unconsciousness and coma.

Hypersmolar diabetic syndrome is normally caused because the person has not taken their normal insulin dosage or they are eating foodstuffs high in sugar consistently.

Typical symptoms of the syndrome are

Excessive urination

Extreme thirst

If these symptoms are detected early then simply taking the insulin dosage and changing eating habits should bring the problem under control. Drinking lots of water will be necessary but this will not stop the syndrome as it is merely addressing a side-effect of the problem. If the problem isn't detect early then, once again, medical assistance should be sort.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a complex complication that occurs when the body is starved of energy. This causes the body to metabolize fat to produce energy. During this process harmful toxins known as ketones are produced by the liver. Ketones cause the blood to become acidic and blood that has a ph level of 6.8 is said to be incompatible with life. Thus as the blood becomes more acidic the person will become more drowsy and eventually become unconscious.

Typically people that forget or miss their insulin injections are prone to develop this problem. Another instance when this occurs is undiagnosed diabetics who are unaware of the condition and therefore do not take insulin.

Common symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis include

A 'fruity' breath - a strong and sweet smelling breath.

Lethargy and drowsiness

excessive urination and thirst

nauseous and stomach upsets

diabetic ketoacidosis will cause the sufferer to go into a coma if left untreated. It is important to seek medical help if you think that you have symptoms of this condition.

Most unconsciousness, due to diabetes, can be prevented through diligent administering of your diabetic treatment. This will be discussed with you by your doctor or health professional. As you get used to diabetes it will become second nature to care for it. You will also become more aware of the changes in your body and will be more responsive to act.
